Sounds faulty, as when mine went the back of the control panel got hot but not the grips. Think it was mainly down to my installation as I shorted them out when connecting to the battery. Cannot remember which way round you are meant to connect things directly to the battery + first or - first...

This is how have toured a couple of times. I must say though that you don't really feel it on your back as you are leaning forward just a small amount not to feel it. Didn't buy the adapter though, just fastened it to the frame as shown in another post.
