Destroyed LCD

Well, so I have just destroyed my LCD screen. F@$#!
I was cleaning up the bike with a bug-removing-product when I noticed a bit of dirt on the LCD and decided to wipe it with the sponge I was using for removing the bugs and stuff. After rinsing it with water I was shocked to find out that the screen was no longer clear but all foggy/cloudy. I guess the bug-removal-product had some sort of chemical that reacted with the screen. Now it looks like shit and I think it's permanent. I fear that the only solution will be to replace the whole unit or do you guys have any ideas? Anyone have an idea how much the LCD unit costs?

Not sure mate. Get a pic up so we can see it.

There are currently 3 for sale on Ebay (uk) from £170-£200

I took a picture yesterday but it's hard to see the foggyness. It's as if the screen stop being 100% clear and now is more like 30% opaque. I can still read everything but it's slightly blurry. I will try taking another picture today.

It might be possible to polish it out. I've seen the plastic casings of modern headlights that have been scratched polished to looking like new. Its not too hard but you will need a little patience!

I'd have thought this is correct. If it's a chemical reaction caused it, you probably only have to take off a very thin layer.

Try rubbing it with some kind of metal polish first - in a corner maybe, that won't effect it if it doesn't work. If it doesn't, increasingly fine wet+dry paper might do the trick.

Another chemical to stay clear of on the MT-07 is SDoc100. It ruined the finish on the two black water pipes near the clutch assembly.

Those things are really badly finished anyway. Half the MT07s on the road have salt corrosion on those pipes.

Some people have had them replaced under warranty. If yours are really bad, might be worth a try.

Yeah, I already got them replaced under warranty. Steering clear of that product now!

Sorry ReGo, I didn't mean to hijack the thread away from the LCD screen, I just thought it was worth mentioning other chemicals that certain parts of the MT-07 is allergic to

No worries! ;)

Anyways, here are the pictures of the LCD: 20150610_182148.jpg20150610_182201.jpg

I think I will try the toothpaste trick tomorrow. If that fails, I will go for the Wet & Dry Sand Paper. And if that fails as well, I will look for a used LCD. There is a totaled MT-07 at my local shop (in case you're wondering the kid is OK, just a few bruises. Some guy cut him off and he's getting a new bike from the insurance company) and from what I remember the LCD was somehow intact. I can probably get a good deal on that one. I'll keep you guys posted. Thanks everyone for all the help already!

is it ok when wet?
if so you can just get some clear coat (lacquer) and paint it as option 3.
option 4 may be to put on some clear film, you know, like the ones you protect your mobile phone screen with, and that bonding might just get rid of the haze too.

Yeah, it looks perfect when wet. It's only when it dries that it gets hazy again. I will try the clear coat as well, thanks mate!

Ive heard t-cut will take out scratches in the screen (If its knackered youve nothing to loose by trying)
dont think wet and dry will work but a buffing cloth may (Try a small corner patch to test)

That looks like it's been sandpapered, if you try we n dry just try it in a corner if you have some
solvo autosol that works on car head lights.

I would give toothpaste a go, had some good results on some of my watches (after being advised by a jeweller) it takes time but works.

Can I make another suggestion? Try the finest grade of machine cutting/mopping compound - its used specifically to polish laquer by professional bodywork specialist. Its less abrasive than metal polish, sort of 1 step up from normal car polish, with a very soft rag I suspect it would work well, with a lot of elbow grease or a drill mop. Try to persuade local paint shop to sell you a small amount, its usually bought by the litre in the trade (or try morleys paints in Derby, UK, I've seen it for sale there, think they have an ebay shop too). Let us know what, if anything, does the trick. Good luck!

You can get stuff for mobi phone screens that works well and jewellers rouge is another
it's certainly made me think before getting anything near mine.

I'd think something mild like Autoglym super resin polish should do it fine. Used it to make the plastic reflectors on classic bikes shiny again. It's quite a good plastic polish and very fine!
